Although birthday cakes have now become essential to birthday parties all around the world, one has to wonder, how did it all start? It is known that the ancient Romans enjoyed cakes at their birthdays, but the tradition of presenting cakes on birthdays was established and made popular much later, in 19th century Western Europe. This is thanks, in part, to the introduction of temperature-controlled ovens and modern baking powder in the 1840s, which made cake-making a lot simpler. As bakeries began to sell cakes, these tasty treats became readily available to the masses and became staples at birthdays.
Birthday cakes can come in many shapes and sizes, but round and square cakes are the most traditional. Typically, round cakes can be baked in six, eight, ten, twelve, fourteen, sixteen and eighteen inch pans. A 6-inch round cake can serve between 6 to 8 people, while an 18-inch round cake can serve as many as 90 to 100 people. While square cakes are baked in pans of similar sizes, they are able to serve more people. For example, a 6-inch square cake may be served to between 8 to 10 people, while an 18-inch square cake can serve between 115 to 135 people.
Choose the right one and make it a pleasant surprise for that special birthday boy or girls!
